Med Debt Matters: Get Out the Vote

Medical Debt and Voting: A Matter of Urgent Importance

A health advocacy group called Community Catalyst is taking action to organize and engage millions of people who are disproportionately affected by medical debt and lack a powerful voice on the ballot. The ambitious campaign, called "I Am A Medical Debt Voter," aims to mobilize and empower voters who could hold the key to future policy changes.

First-of-Its-Kind Voting Campaign

The multi-faceted campaign comprises paid media, digital outreach, and in-person events in key battleground states across the United States. Set to launch on the Tuesday night following the presidential debate, the effort will emphasize the stories of individuals impacted by medical debt, as well as provide valuable resources, tools, and information vital to those navigating the ever-growing crisis.

Key Statistics and Concerns

Did you know that it’s estimated over 100 million people in the country have medical or dental bills they’re still paying or overdue? A staggering finding by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) disclosed that individuals in the U.S. owe at least $220 billion in outstanding medical debt, with close to 20 million borrowers owing more than $250. Medical debt has an alarming ripple effect, spreading far beyond individual households; it affects communities, employment, and the overall nation’s economic well-being.
